IT Project Management
is the application of knowledge, skills,
tools and techniques to a broad range of activities in order to meet
the requirements of the particular project. A project is a temporary
endeavor undertaken to achieve a particular aim. Project management
knowledge and practices are best described in terms of their component
processes. Depending on the project management methodology different
processes can be identified.
The
PRINCE2 methodology defines eight
processes:
- Starting Up a Project (SU)
- Planning (PL)
- Initiating a Project (IP)
- Directing a Project (DP)
- Controlling a Stage (CS)
- Managing Product Delivery (MP)
- Managing Stage Boundaries (SB)
- Closing a Project (CP)
Usually the following knowledge areas are covered by the processes:
- Project Integration Management,
- Project Scope Management,
- Project Time Management,
- Project Cost Management,
- Project Quality Management,
- Project Human Resource Management,
- Project Communications Management,
- Project Risk Management, and
- Project Procurement Management.
